Crime news: In a harrowing incident, Shraddha Walkar, a 27-year-old Indian woman, met a grim fate at the hands of her 28-year-old boyfriend and live-in partner, Aaftab Amin Poonawala, in Delhi on May 18, 2022. The shocking details of the case only emerged nearly six months after the murder. Shraddha’s father filed a missing persons complaint when he discovered that she had been unresponsive to her friends for over two-and-a-half months. On that fateful day, Aaftab Poonawala allegedly strangled Shraddha during an argument and proceeded to dismember her body into 35 pieces, reportedly charring her face to conceal her identity. A chilling 300-litre fridge was utilized to store her remains, which were methodically disposed of in the Chhatarpur forest over 18 days, each night at around 2 AM to avoid suspicion.

Aaftab Poonawala was apprehended by the Delhi Police on November 12, 2022. Shraddha’s grief-stricken father is vehemently demanding the death penalty for Aaftab, seeking justice for his daughter’s heinous fate.

Shraddha Walkar’s life took a turn when, against her family’s wishes, she chose to live with Aaftab in 2019. Their interfaith relationship was opposed by her family, who disapproved of her decision to live with someone she barely knew. Friends and family have alleged that Poonawala subjected Shraddha to regular physical abuse leading up to the tragic incident.

Both Shraddha and Aaftab worked at the same MNC call center, and it was through the Bumble app that their paths initially crossed. Aaftab confessed to the murder after the police uncovered inconsistencies in his statements and retrieved evidence linking him to the crime. The charges against him are based on witness testimony and substantial evidence pointing to the gruesome act.

The public response to this horrific crime has varied from shock to victim-blaming, with questions arising about Shraddha’s decisions and her involvement in an interfaith relationship. In the midst of these reactions, Kaushal Kishore, the Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, has suggested that couples intending to live together should register in court or undergo proper registration, emphasizing caution for women considering such live-in relationships.
